System design and
pre-production
Mike provides pre-tour system design and specification, producing schematics and drawings for audio vendors to work from. He prepares console and plugin server files in advance, ensuring everything is ready to hit the ground running at the first rehearsal.
Before meeting a new artist, Mike does his homework: listening to the artist’s music, confirming the specific audio requirements with the audio team and Production Management, preparing his console files and liaising with the audio vendor. On day one of rehearsals, the artist can walk in and get straight to work.
Mike says: “I think good communication and prep are major keys to success. I will always try to pass on as much information as possible to audio vendors, Systems Engineers, and techs, well in advance, so we’re all on the same page from the start. Ideally, I like to have a prep day at the vendor’s warehouse prior to rehearsals, to make sure everything works as it should, and there are no unexpected surprises. The only surprises I don’t mind are things like the lighting guy bringing me a coffee, or the PM saying ‘this is on me!’ when we go out for dinner…”
Ready for day one of rehearsals
Now the prep is done, let’s get the show on the road. It’s time to do the Front of House Engineering or Monitor Engineering.
